Why this Book?

For over a decade, I’ve been photographing Kolkata—capturing thousands of fleeting moments. The idea of giving these images a physical form was compelling, but there was something deeper driving me. I wanted to share my vision of Kolkata—not just how it looks, but how it feels. I wanted to craft a unique narrative that goes beyond individual photographs—presents a cohesive story of life in the city and my personal relationship with it.

For me, Kolkata is a city defined by its people and its unique way of life. Having roamed its streets for 15 years with my camera in hand, I've come to intimately understand and appreciate the rhythm of life here. It is a city where tradition and modernity coexist seamlessly, where every corner tells a story, and every face bears the mark of resilience and warmth. I see the warmth of genuine humanity and the supremacy of emotion over all other aspects of human existence here in this city. And that's my biggest inspiration behind creating this book.

About the Book Cover: A Love Triangle

As the cover of the book suggests, this is a love story. But not a conventional one—it is a love triangle. The three points of this triangle are:

📍 Kolkata, the city that breathes history, culture, and emotion. (Represented by the little girl dressed as a Bengalli bride)

📍 The people of Kolkata, who are not just residents but are married to the city itself, inseparable from its essence. (Represented by the little boy dressed as a Bengalli groom)

📍 Me, the photographer, an admirer—capturing their moments, their emotions, and their undying connection to the city. (Represented by the little Admirer)

This book is the culmination of my love for Kolkata and its people. It is my attempt to share that love, to tell a story that is both deeply personal and universally relatable.

To everyone who has supported me on this journey—and to those who have unknowingly contributed just by being a part of Kolkata’s everyday life—thank you. This book is as much yours as it is mine.

Saumalya Ghosh has brought out his first photo book, In Love With Kolkata, which, as he says, is a search for the city’s soul. In his quest, he has wandered across the city – the ghats, maidan, markets, the Chinese part of town, the many lanes which have so many stories to tell.
He has tried to capture the many rituals, pujo, cultural activities and so many other events that define the spirit of Kolkata, and bring its people together.
What’s very interesting is the journey to seek its soul even though it remains ever so elusive. In the process, he makes images of people playing chess under a flyover, some folks dancing in the rain, or just having breakfast on the streets. Simple moments, yet they stay with you.
Anyone who loves Kolkata, or wants to see the city through Saumalya’s eyes, this is a must book to have and savour. It is a visual journey of a beautiful city with its many quirks, joys, madness and, most importantly, its ineffable charm. Every page tells a story, and makes you yearn for more.
I enjoyed the journey immensely, and wish Saumalya success for the road ahead.

The book brings to life the everyday rhythms of Kolkata - its vibrant streets, quiet corners, and the unmistakable spirit of its people.

Wandering through its bustling streets, narrow lanes, and quiet moments, Ghosh brings out the poetry in the ordinary. His lens finds beauty in chaos, emotion in fleeting glances, and rhythm in the everyday hustle.

With a keen eye for light, composition, and timing, “In Love with Kolkata” is more than a collection of images. It’s a street-level love story that invites viewers to walk alongside the photographer and feel the pulse of a city that never stands still.
