Buddha Purnima is among the most auspicious day of the year. The day celebrates the birth of Siddhartha Gautama or Gautam Buddha in 563 B.C. The usual mode of celebration is by lighting of oil lamps, recital of prayers and Buddhist scriptures.The devotees worship by offering fruits, flowers, silk scarves to the statues of Lord Buddha. In India, Bodhgaya holds a special significance in the day’s celebrations as it is the place where Gautam Buddha first attained enlightenment. Mahabodhi temple in the city gets draped in prayer flags and is filled with the fragrance of fresh flowers on this day.
